Tobacco industry document resources

Most people will not be particularly interested in searching through the thousands of publicly available tobacco industry documents. These sites are of most interest to serious tobacco control researchers, lawyers and others heavily involved in tobacco control advocacy.

This list is not intended to be exhaustive. Most of the links listed here provide links to other repositories of tobacco industry documents - some are very comprehensive.

International reports

Trust us - we're the tobacco industry - May 2001
This report was compiled by the US Campaign for tobacco-free kids and UK's Action on Smoking and Health. Industry quotes cover addiction, advertising, economics, agriculture, developing countries, 2nd hand smoke, smuggling, product design, youth and the companies' own anti-smoking programmes, women, lobbying and media relations.

Tobacco explained - the truth about the tobacco industry in its own words
Compiled by ASH in the UK, this report is available as either seven researchable chronologies, or a summary report for general use in a single pdf file. [See ASH UK > Tobacco Industry > conduct]. It covers industry statements on tobacco and health, addiction, marketing to children, advertising, passive smoking, cigarette design, and developing countries.

A 2000 UK report describing how tobacco advertising works, using industry documents.

Diary of Denial (Australia)
One of the earliest compilations of industry quotes, this time from Australia. It documents the history of tobacco industry denials about the health effects of smoking, addictiveness of nicotine and marketing of tobacco products to children.

Tobacco Scam - How Big Tobacco uses and abuses the restaurant industry
Directed at the hospitality industry, this site explains that going smoke-free is good for business, and exposes Big Tobacco's tactics to convince the industry otherwise.

The Cigarette Papers (Stan Glantz et al, 1996)
This book, available online, examines the way that tobacco companies have misled consumers about the harm caused by tobacco over decades.
