Smoke-free education and childcare guidelines

Updated in 2008. A comprehensive, integrated approach to tobacco prevention in schools.  Taking a health promoting school approach to tobacco prevention through:
  • Curriculum, teaching and learning
  • School organisation, ethos and environment
  • Partnerships and services
The guidelines were developed in collaboration with representatives from the three education sectors, Early Childhood Australia and other key stakeholders, and have been trialled by South Australian schools.

The guidelines have been endorsed by the three education sectors and Early Childhood Australia and are available via download  to all schools and childcare centres. They are both a source of information about smoking as well as a practical document for schools and early childhood centres to use to develop a smoke-free policy.

The guidelines provide information around:
  • Tobacco use and health - the facts
  • Using a health promoting school framework/ whole school drug strategy
  • Role of staff and care providers in minimising tobacco related harm
  • Tobacco smoking - stages and strategies
  • Developing a smoke-free policy for your school/ECC
  • Steps for developing guidelines for your school/ECC and
  • Mapping what is happening and the 'where to from here'.

Peer support program activities
A collaborative project ‘Tobacco and smoking’ uses peer influence to challenge tobacco beliefs and behaviours. This resource was developed collaboratively by Quit SA and the Peer Support Foundation of South Australia.

It is available to all schools where a staff member has completed peer support training.

It builds on to existing structures in peer leadership and aims to increase young people's awareness of smoking and tobacco-related issues and challenge their beliefs about tobacco use.
