Expert advice and support for young people, teachers and the education sector
The Smarter Than Smoking SA Project aims to prevent young people from becoming or continuing to be smokers through conducting effective programs in schools and with young people in the community. The Smarter than Smoking SA message specifically targets the 10-15 year old age group. This project began in WA as an initiative of Healthway, developed by a coalition of WA government and non-government organisations and managed by the National Heart Foundation (WA Division).

Smoke-free education and childcare guidelines
Updated in 2008. A comprehensive, integrated approach to tobacco prevention in schools.  Taking a health promoting school approach to tobacco prevention through:

  • Curriculum, teaching and learning
  • School organisation, ethos and environment
  • Partnerships and services
The guidelines were developed in collaboration with representatives from the three education sectors, Early Childhoos Australia and other key stakeholders, and have been trialled by South Australian schools.

The guidelines have been endorsed by the three education sectors and Early Childhood Australia and are available via download  to all schools and childcare centres. They are both a source of information about smoking as well as a practical document for schools and early childhood centres to use to develop a smoke-free policy.

The guidelines provide information around:
  • Tobacco use and health - the facts
  • Using a health promoting school framework/ whole school drug strategy
  • Role of staff and care providers in minimising tobacco related harm
  • Tobacco smoking - stages and strategies
  • Developing a smoke-free policy for your school/ECC
  • Steps for developing guidelines for your school/ECC and
  • Mapping what is happening and the 'where to from here'.

Critics’ Choice competition

The Critics' Choice is an annual national competition for schools (Years 5-12) students. Students watch Australian and overseas anti-tobacco TV commercials and choose the one they think would help stop them smoking, or make them quit.

Critics' Choice: May 31- September 24 2010

An innovative anti-tobacco teaching tool run in schools

Critics’ Choice is an exciting resource for schools aimed at encouraging primary and secondary students to watch, critique and discuss 12 anti-tobacco TV commercials from Australia and overseas.

After watching the television commercials, students are asked to rate them and choose the one they think would be most likely to stop them taking up smoking, or encourage them to quit.

Critics’ Choice 2010 will run in schools from May 31 to the end of term 3 - September 24 2010 with 12 new anti-tobacco commercials.

Registrations have now opened and can be downloaded by clicking here

Once registered, a Critics’ Choice Kit will be forwarded before World No Tobacco Day, May 31st 2010. Critics’ Choice is available on an all inclusive interactive DVD.
