Addressing Tobacco in Hospitals and Health Services
Quit SA, the Department of Health and the new Regional Health Services are working in partnership to ‘Address Tobacco in Hospitals and Health Services’ with the goal of improving the environment, services and health outcomes for staff, patients and visitors.
The project is focused on establishing and implementing a consistent set of strategies across all hospitals and health services that would support the actions of health workers. Strategies include a common approach to smoke-free signage across all campuses, and the routine provision of encouragement and support such as at-cost nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for staff who smoke, assisting patients’ to remain smoke-free during their stays by offering NRT (where appropriate), and providing brief interventions, encouragement, advice and referral to the Quitline.
There is strong and clear evidence that the actions of health workers are much more effective if the surrounding environments are also supportive.
