This site is a unique source of evidence-based data and practical support for the treatment of tobacco dependence. It is aimed at a wide range of professional groups including: physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, psychologists, researchers and policy makers.

This part of the Cochrane Library site provides titles and abstracts of systematic reviews undertaken by this group. Full text accessible only to subscribers.

Tobacco Control Supersite
This site is maintained by Professor Simon Chapman, a leading Australian and international tobacco control advocate. Great for finding out about the activities of the tobacco industry in Australia, as well as recently published press and journal articles.

Action on Smoking and Health (Australia)
ASH is now producing a regular online newsletter for health professionals called Smoke Signals - Look under Information for Health professionals. It provides a monthly update aimed at keeping health professionals in tobacco control informed about the latest tobacco news, developments and issues. ASH is an advocacy organisation, based in Sydney, and provides links to information and resources, including tobacco legislation and litigation and fact sheets.

ASH in the United Kingdom
A comprehensive site providing access to information on all aspects of smoking. Cessation policy documents and many full text reports are available for download.


 
Especially for dentists

While most people are aware that smoking is a risk to their health, may are unaware that smoking has a considerable effect on the mouth. Some of these effects are immediate, others take longer to appear.

The following links provide both general consumer information about smoking and oral health, and more detailed information suitable for students and health professionals.

Smoking and Oral Health from Ash UK [www.ash.org.uk]
This report provides detailed, referenced information about all aspects of smoking and oral health, including graphic pictures. It also provides prevention and smoking cessation information. Suitable for upper secondary and tertiary students, and health professionals.

Tobacco Use and Periodontal Disease from the American Academy for Periodontists
Consumer information about periodontal disease and smoking is provided. The section headed Research Studies provides links to abstracts of relevant articles in the Journal of Periodontology.

American Dental Association

Provides links to information about smoking and oral health for health professionals.

FDI World Dental Federation
Go to Public Health >Tobacco. This provides links about tobacco in the dental setting.

Canadian Dental Association
This links to an issue of the Canadian Dental Association Journal featuring a number of key articles on treating tobacco dependence in the dental setting.

National Clearinghouse on Tobacco and Health Program
