Alternative therapies

Alternative therapies to assist you to quit smoking include:
  • hypnotherapy,
  • herbal remedies,
  • aromatherapy,
  • and acupuncture.
While some people may find them helpful, there is little evidence to support the effectiveness of alternative therapies as a means of stopping smoking. Alternative therapies could be combined with cognitive behavioral strategies, and counselling support such as the Quitline 13 7848 to help make smoking cessation successful.

If you are considering using an alternative therapy to help you stop smoking you should always ensure the practitioner is fully qualified.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is an altered state characterized by increased relaxation, concentration and suggestibility. The subconscious mind can be accessed and focused on a particular goal, such as quitting smoking.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese therapy. It uses needles to stimulate particular energy points in the body. Acupressure, laser therapy and electrostimulation are variations of acupuncture therapy. According to a 2006 review, there is no consistent evidence that acupuncture, acupressure, laser therapy or electrostimulation are effective for smoking cessation. [1]

Herbal remedies

There are a number of herbal remedies on the market, available through your pharmacy. Talk to your pharmacist about them and see if you think they will help you.

You need to be committed to quitting to succeed. There is no such thing as a magic cure.

Beware of any type of therapy or course that claims fantastic success rates. There is no evidence that any alternative therapies are particularly successful in the long term.
