An important feature of Quit SA activities is the range of partnerships formed with other groups to provide resources and sustainability of tobacco control programs in South Australia.
These collaborations enable specialist groups to be more effective, and increase the penetration of Quit SA programs to groups not otherwise accessed, especially to priority target groups with high smoking prevalence.
Quit SA provides advice and support to a number of specially funded projects in strategic areas:
Centrelink Project – Working with low income earners
Provision of additional smoking cessation support to Centrelink customers on income support payments was initially introduced in August 2005 for customers attending the Elizabeth and Salisbury Centrelink offices. This was extended in November 2005 to customers attending the Noarlunga, Marion and Glenelg Centrelink offices. Centrelink customers who fulfil the eligibility criteria are able to join the 12-week Quitline program and also receive up to 10 weeks of subsidised nicotine replacement therapy. There are plans to continue extending this project across the state.
Correctional Services Project – Working with prisoners
In October 2005, a trial at Mobilong Prison involved providing a Quit Course and heavily subsidised Nicotine Replacement Therapy to a small group of prisoners. This project is currently being extended to seven of the eight government operated correctional services facilities. Ongoing smoking cessation support to prisoners will be dependant on securing additional funding.
