What is it and how does it work?
The 12 week program is a pro-active schedule of call-backs provided to those who want extra help and support to maximise their chance of success. Calls are scheduled flexibly at times and intervals to suit each quitter.
About relapse
Most relapse occurs within 3 months of quitting. Quitline maintains contact with those in the program during this period, to help prevent relapse after initial quitting. Most callers receive between 6 and 8 calls, and calls average 9 minutes.
Effectiveness
We know that smokers who use even the basic Quitline service (just one call) have much higher quit rates that those who don't. Behavioural counselling by telephone has been shown to significantly reduce drop-out rates and enhance long-term quit rates.
